HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

We had lots of fun today!
But we still learned a couple of things!
We learned the vowel team ie.
We pretended that we were saluting.
We also learned some Halloween safety rules:
  1. Don't eat candy that has been open
  2. Trick or Treat in a neighborhood you know.
  3. Go trick or treating with an adult you trust

Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow.  Also, Monday is Halloween and I am looking forward to seeing the kids in their costumes.  Please send students to school dressed in their costume but please leave out any props that are dangerous or could be lost (ie. swords, guns, etc...).  The party and the dance will be in the afternoon.

Today we learned the vowel team oa.
When we learned this vowel team we pretended that we made a mistake and said "oa, oa"

We have filled up our good behaviour marble jar.  So, we are having a bring your favourite stuffy to school day tomorrow.  The students are really excited and it should be really fun.

Today we learned the letter Jj
When we learned this letter we pretended to jiggle like jello.
We also learned the word families ub and ob.
We made words like hub, tub, Bob and lob.

In computers today we had lots of fun playing Halloween games online.  Check out the Computer Class link on our website to play them at home.

In Math today we worked on place value and ten frames.  The students are really beginning to understand the concept of tens and ones.  Check out yesterday's post to see the work we are doing.

During centres today I continued with testing.  Today the students demonstrated their knowledge of the word families we have learned so far by going through the video below.  These word families can also be practiced by clicking on the Slide Show link on our class website.

Today we learned the long vowel team ai.
When we learned this team we pretended that we had an earache and couldn't hear.



We also reviewed the vowel team rule "When 2 vowels go a walking, the first vowel does the talking" and we watched the video below.





In Social Studies today we learned about the value of responsibility.  We learned that responsibility is doing the jobs that we are supposed to do.  Two things that we discussed being responsible for at school are to, clean up our classroom and listen to the teacher.

Today the new Kanga Pouches came in.  Students will now being using these for homework bags.  They need to bring them back to school everyday.  If you did not send in your Kanga Pouch from last year then please send in $6.50 to cover the cost of a new one.

We pretended that we were squishing the air out of our inflatable fish.

In language arts today we finished working with the book "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat".  Today we worked on finishing the cloze sentence "There was an old lady who swallowed a ______.  She swallowed the _________ to __________ the bat.  Here is a picture of the completed work hanging in the hallway, but for a closer look come in and check it out sometime.



Finally, in Art today we made our own version of Van Gogh's Starry Night by doing a crayon resist painting.  Pictures to come next week.

In language arts today we started a week long activity with the book "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat".  Today we worked on sorting words from the story that were either nouns, action words or describing words.

In Math today we worked on representing numbers in different ways.  We even got to use stickers to  as a fun way to represent numbers.

Finally, today we got to go listen to the Jubiloso Handbell Choir.  It was really beautiful music played by incredible performers!


If you would like to hear them The Handbell Discovery 2011 Concert is coming to Holy Trinity High School October 15th, at 7pm.  Guest performers will include: The Concordia College Choir Jubiloso, Quarter Notes, and Solo Ringer. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for a child.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend and enjoyed time with family and friends.  Just a reminder that THURSDAY is PJ day and we are asking for a $2 donation for the United Way.


We got our iPod touches today and we explored the first app that we put on it.  It is called Read Me Stories and it is full of great stories to read or listen to.  Check it out by clicking on the image below:






In Language Arts today we read the story "Birthday Party PANDAmonium".  It was a story about a little girl's birthday party where all the guests showed up in animal costumes.  We then wrote the following sentence in our journals:


If I went to a costume party I would dress up as a _________________.


Students tried  really hard to sound out their costume on their own and worked at writing neatly in their journals.

First off, just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow and that Monday is Thanksgiving Day.

Today we learned the letter Uu

When we learned this letter we pretended that we were putting up an umbrella.


We also learned the word families up and ut.
We made words like cut, Tut, puppy, and cup.

This afternoon we had our Thanksgiving Day Liturgy.  We sang some great songs and we learned all about Unicef.  The campaign information can be found in students homework bags tonight.

In art today we made Hand and Foot Turkeys.  We really worked hard at cutting on the lines.  Check out the hard-workers below:

In Social today we reviewed what a rural community was.  We then watched a movie about urban communities.  It was called the Magic School Bus in The City.  To watch it click on the following link:

In math we started a new numbers 0-20 unit.  
The learning goals for this unit are:

  1. Read and print numbers to 20.
  2. Read number words to 20.
  3. Count forward from 0-20 and backward from 20-0.
  4. Count by matching the number word to the objects being counted.
  5. Build numbers by arranging and rearranging objects.
  6. Recognise familiar groups of objects or dots.
  7. Compare and order numbers and groups of objects using words such as more, less and same.
  8. Estimate the number of objects and check by counting.
  9. Use real life materials to help solve simple number problems.

Here are some activities you can do at home.

  1. Use small objects to have your child show you groups of 1-20
  2. Compare like sets (the same number of objects) and have you child talk about how they are alike
  3. Play I Spy using numbers as the key (ie. I spy something with four legs)
  4. Use small objects to have your child show a number in different ways (12 keys, 12 spoons, 12 toys)
  5. Do the Ten Frame Slide Show on the class website (click on the slideshows link to the lower left)
  6. Give your child spoons & forks.  Have them come up with diff. combinations to show 11 objects.
  7. Practice estimating groups of objects between 1-20.
  8. Practice number words by clicking on the link below.
  9. Practice counting to 20.

Finally, at the end of the day we had a fire drill.  It was pretty chilly outside.  Have a great night!

So first off, I would like to say thanks to everyone for all their hard work doing the Purdy's fundraiser.  We raised enough money to purchase 2 iPod touches, 2 iPads, 4 sets of headphones, charging cables, av cables, and protector cases.  The chocolate will be delivered in early November and I'll let you know about pick up as soon as it comes in.

In language arts today we made a list of things we are thankful for.  Students came up with some very thoughtful things.  Check out the list we made:



We then made some turkey feathers with the cloze sentence _________ is thankful for_____________ to put on our turkey in the hallway.  It looked pretty darn good when it was finished.



In Social we read the story "Town Mouse, Country Mouse" by Jann Brett.  We then learned the terms rural and urban to describe different types of communities.  There is a pretty Town Mouse Country Mouse colouring page you can print up by clicking on the following link:
