Christmas Craft Party Fun!!

Have a great holidays and a Merry Christmas!!

Dec 19, 2012

The kids were really excited because we surpassed our goal of 100 items for the food bank.

We finished off with the Jolly Phonics program today by learning the letter teams er and ar.
We pretended that we were using a mixer when we said the er sound and that we were seals when we said the ar sound.

In computers we played some fun Christmas games.  They are on the website and I promised the kids that I would leave them up throughout the break so they could play them at home

In Math we did a little quiz to review what we learned about adding and subtracting so far.  We will continue with this adding and subtracting uniy after we do a quick measurement unit after the break.

Finally, tomorrow is our Christmas craft party and PJ Day.

Have a great night!

Dec 18, 2012

We have almost reached our food bank goal:

We learned 2 new vowel teams today, oi and ue.  We pretended to shout to other ships when we practiced oi and we pointed at our friends when we practiced ue.

Afterwards, we continued to talk about the Nativity Story.  Here is a video telling the story:

In Math, we worked on stories of 12.  For example:

-There are 10 walruses on an iceberg.  3 jump into the freezing ocean.  That leaves 7 on the iceberg.
-Five snakes are slithering through the grass.  Along came 7 lizards to join them.  How many creatures are there?

Finally, we ended our day down at Keyano rehearsing for the concert.  We did great.  As for tonight, here is the plan of attack:
  • Dress in your Sunday best
  • Arrive at Keyano at 6pm
  • Bring your child to the door by the box office to drop them off
  • If you only have a div one child, after the concert come and pick up your child backstage (this will be chaotic so please be patient)
  • If you have a child in the div 2 concert you can leave your div 1 child backstage and we will look after them until after the concert.
Hope this helps with the craziness tonight and I hope you enjoy the concert.

The kids started the morning off with a substitute teacher because I sliced open my finger with a cheese slicer and ended up with 4 stitches.  Yuck!

However in Religion they listened to the Nativity Story: Luke 2:1-7:

They also rehearsed for the Christmas concert with the rest of the Grade ones for the first time.  Tomorrow we will have our rehearsal at Keyano and then the concert is tomorrow night.

In Math we figured out how to figure out a missing symbol.  For example what symbol would be in the following problems:  5 _ 3 = 8 and 9 _ 7 = 2.
One strategy we learned was that for addition sentences the biggest number is at the end and for subtraction the biggest number is at the beginning.  Here is a game where you can practice this and other math skills.

Have a great night!

Dec 13, 2012...later that night

John, the Elf on the Shelf, getting ready to head back to the North Pole with 1E's letter to Santa!!

Dec 13, 2012

We learned the vowel team "ou" today.  We pretended that we had poked our finger with a pin.

We finished our letters to Santa today.  Mrs. Easton is taking them home to give to her Elf on the Shelf John, so that he can take them to Santa.

In art we made beaded ornaments for our Christmas trees.  They are coming home in our Kanga Pouches tonight.

In Science, today we read the book "Eating the Alphabet" by Lois Ehlert.  We talked about all the different colours you see when you look at all the different fruits and vegetables we find in nature.

Have a great weekend!!

PS Don't forget to do your Raz-Kids assessment.

Dec 12, 2012

This morning we were really lucky and got to watch the EEP and kindergarten Christmas concert. They did awesome.

In LA we started our letters to Santa. The kids definitely know more about the new toys on the market then I do.

In Math this afternoon we worked on Mental Math.  This is when we try to figure out the answer to math problems without using manipulatives (fingers, counters, pictures, etc...)  Here is a great website to practice this on:

This afternoon we went to the Advent Liturgy put on by 6M. Here is one of the songs we sang.

Have a great night!!!

Dec 11, 2012

Today we learned the letter Qq,  We know that the letter "Qq" is a conjoined twin and is always attached to the letter "u".  When we practiced the letter letter sound we pretended that we were quaking like a duck.

In Science we brainstormed where we see colours in the world.  This is the list we made:

We continued with the colour theme in LA.  We talked about all the different colours of Rudolph and then created our own Rudolphs with a descriptive colour paragraph.

Finally, in Math today we learned about using a number line to help us answer addition and subtraction questions.  Check out the little movie we made:

Have a great night!!!

Dec 10, 2012

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  Just a reminder that we are still collecting items for the food bank.  In particular, our class is collecting oral hygiene items.  Our class goal is to have 100 items.  Check out our progress so far:

In Jolly Phonics today we learned the th and the th sounds.  The th sound vibrates when you say it (put your hand on your throat to feel it) .  Think of words like this and that: .  The th sound is voiceless, for example, thinking and three.

When we practiced these words we pretended we were rude clowns sticking out our tongues:

In Religion we read the scripture Luke 1: 26-38.

In Math we began learning about subtraction.  We started with basic subtraction stories.  For example, there were 9 snowmen in my front yard.  The sun came out and melted the 6 snowmen not shaded by my house.  How many snowmen are left?  What is the subtraction sentence?  (9-6=3)

In Science we began the Creating Colour Unit.  The learner objectives for this unit are:

Dec 6, 2012

Today we learned the word families ush, ash and osh.
We made words like; flush, rush, mash, trash, gosh and posh

In Art we made torn art Christmas trees.  Mrs. Easton learned a good lesson today, tearing paper in a straight line is tricky in grade one.  The results still look great they and they are coming home to add to your Christmas decor.

In Science, we finished up our Seasonal Changes Science unit with a quiz.  The results will be coming home soon.

Have a great weekend!!!

Dec 5, 2012

We learned the digraph sh today.
We pretended that we were shushing a baby.

We also learned the ish word family.
We made words like; wish, fish, dish and swish

In LA we talked about things we hope for this advent season.  The kids came up with a great list:
  1. This Advent I hope for my family to get together.
  2. This Advent I hope for families to have food.
  3. This Advent I hope for all kids to get toys.
  4. This Advent I hope for all my friends and I to make good decisions.
  5. This Advent I hope for there to be peace in the world.
They then made their own Advent Wreaths.

In Math we played the addition game Add 'Em Up as a class on the promethean board.

After, we played it on our own with our partner.

Have a great night!!!

Dec 4, 2012

This morning we celebrated with the rest of the school at our first Advent Liturgy of the year.  We celebrated the spirit of Hope!  6C did a great job putting it on.

We learned the digraph ch today.  A digraph is when you put two consonants together and they make a new sound.  We pretended that we were choo-choo-trains when we practiced the sound.

We then learned the word family uch.
We made words like touch, such and much.

In LA we read the story Olive the Other Reindeer by J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh.  You can read the story online by going on the FMPL website and clicking on the TumbleBooks link.  After reading the story we thought maybe we could be reindeer too.  So we decided to fill out a job application form.  Check out some of the examples below:

In gym today we were really lucky to have Lou Pote from Fort McMurray Baseball come in to teach us a bit about baseball.  Check out the picture below of our winners of the hardest throw (Coach Lou used the laser gun to measure):

In Math, we worked on solving tricky addition stories.  Check out this tricky one:

Have a great night!

Dec 3, 2012

Wow, it's December!

We learned 2 new word families this morning; ix and ox.
We made words like: six, fix, box and lox.

Today we began our classroom celebration of Advent. We lit our hope candle in our Advent wreath and talked about things that give us hope and things that we are hopeful for.  Tomorrow we will be celebrating an Advent Liturgy at 9am put on by 6C, please feel free to join us.

In math we learned about doubles facts.  A doubles facts is a number sentence where two of the same numbers are added together. That is, a doubles fact has the same addend.  For example: 4+4=8.  Here are some games you can play at home:

In Science today we reviewed all of the seasons.  We dressed up paper dolls in clothes appropriate for each season.  There is a great iPad app called iLearn with Poko: Seasons and Weather that you can use at home.

Have a great night!
